    Planning & reference

The Rmila Reserve offers a more intimate and less crowded desert experience than some of its more famous neighbours. We love the authentic feel of the landscape and the genuine hospitality of the local guides who share their deep knowledge of the region's flora and fauna. The sunsets here are truly sensational, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple.

    Gate Times

The reserve is generally accessible during daylight hours, typically from sunrise to sunset. Specific opening and closing times can vary, so we recommend confirming with your lodge or local guides before arrival. No advance booking or special permits are usually required for day visitors, but access might be managed by lodges for their guests.

    Tipping

Tipping is customary and appreciated. For guides, we suggest around 10-15% of the tour cost or a daily amount of $20-30 USD per person. For camp staff, a general tip pool of $5-10 USD per guest per day is a good guideline, to be distributed amongst cooks, cleaners, and drivers. Rangers often receive separate tips, perhaps $10-20 USD per day, for their expertise and safety contributions.

    Dress Code

We advise neutral, earthy tones for game drives and walks to blend in with the environment. Lightweight, breathable fabrics are essential for the daytime heat. Pack layers including a fleece or warm jacket for cooler mornings and evenings, especially during shoulder seasons. Comfortable walking shoes are a must, and a wide-brimmed hat offers sun protection. Avoid bright colours and camouflage patterns.

    Photography

Photography is generally permitted, but always ask your guide before photographing people, especially in local villages. Drones are typically restricted in protected areas and national parks due to privacy and wildlife disturbance concerns; check specific regulations locally. We recommend a telephoto lens for wildlife, and a wide-angle lens for the dramatic landscapes. Early morning and late afternoon light offer the most spectacular shots.

    Etiquette

Maintain a quiet demeanor on game drives and walks to avoid disturbing wildlife. Stay within your vehicle or designated areas unless instructed otherwise by your guide. Never feed or approach animals too closely. Respect the local culture and customs when interacting with communities. In camp, be mindful of noise levels and respect the privacy of other guests.
