Faces a high risk of extinction in the wild.

Dugongs are threatened by habitat loss, particularly the destruction of seagrass meadows, and by accidental entanglement in fishing gear. While some local conservation efforts are underway, the species overall faces significant challenges. Responsible tourism, such as eco-friendly boat tours that avoid disturbing dugongs and their habitats, can help fund conservation initiatives and raise awareness about the importance of protecting these gentle marine mammals.

The dugong is a marine mammal. It is one of four living species of the order Sirenia, which also includes three species of manatees. It is the only living representative of the once-diverse family Dugongidae; its closest modern relative, Steller's sea cow, was hunted to extinction in the 18th century.
