Giant ground pangolins are critically threatened by illegal poaching for their scales and meat, as well as habitat loss due to agriculture and development. While conservation efforts are underway, including anti-poaching patrols and community engagement programs, their populations continue to decline. Responsible safari tourism plays a vital role by raising awareness, funding conservation initiatives through park fees, and providing economic alternatives to poaching for local communities.
The giant pangolin is a species of pangolin from genus Smutsia of subfamily Smutsiinae within the family Manidae. It is the largest living species of pangolins. Members of the species inhabit Africa with a range stretching along the equator from West Africa to Uganda. It subsists almost entirely on ants and termites.
