The Somali ostrich faces threats from habitat loss due to overgrazing and agricultural expansion, as well as hunting for its meat and eggs. While specific large-scale recovery programs are limited, conservation efforts focus on community engagement and protecting key habitats. Responsible safari tourism helps by providing economic incentives for local communities to protect wildlife and their habitats, and by raising awareness about the importance of conserving this unique species.
The Somali ostrich, also known as the blue-necked ostrich, is a large flightless bird native to the Horn of Africa. It is one of two living species of ostriches, the other being the common ostrich. It was also previously considered a subspecies of the common ostrich, but was identified as a distinct species in 2014. For a long time, Somalis partially domesticated some of these ostriches.
