Conservation Status
Conservation hubFaces an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild.
White-backed vultures face severe threats from poisoning, both intentional and accidental, as well as habitat loss and electrocution from power lines. While conservation efforts are underway, including anti-poisoning campaigns and vulture safe zones, their populations continue to decline rapidly. Responsible safari tourism plays a vital role by funding conservation initiatives, raising awareness among visitors, and providing economic incentives for local communities to protect wildlife, including these essential scavengers.
The white-backed vulture is an Old World vulture in the family Accipitridae, which also includes eagles, kites, buzzards and hawks. It is the most common vulture species in the continent of Africa.
